KHARTOUM AUGUST 21: At least 79 people have been killed in flash floods triggered by heavy rains in Sudan since June, according to a local official on Saturday.

As of 14 August 2022, the estimated number of people affected by heavy rains and floods since May is about 146,175 people. Torrential rains and floods destroyed about 9,600 houses and damaged another 21,968 in 14 states, according to OCHA.

Abdul-Jalil Abdul-Rahim, a spokesman of Sudan’s National Council for Civil Defense, said “most Sudan’s 18 states have been affected by the heavy rains, except Khartoum”.

The Sudanese Meteorological Authority warned against unprecedented rains in most states across the country in upcoming months, urging the citizens to take precautions, particularly those living in low areas which are susceptible to floods.

OCHA data shows that the Nile River water level started to increase during the last week of July, but it largely remains below the alert level. The Atbara River water level, some 300 km northeast of Khartoum, exceeded the alert level on 6 August due to heavy rain in eastern Sudan and the north-western part of Ethiopia.

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said that, compared to the same period last year, the number of affected people and localities in 2022 has doubled.
