KHARTOUM AUGUST 17: About 3 million children under five years suffer from malnutrition in Sudan. Of these, about 650,000 are suffering from severe acute malnutrition, the worst form of malnutrition.

Sudan has one of the largest numbers of malnourished children in the world. Without treatment these children are at risk of severe illness, developmental delays and death.

In the past 30 years, malnutrition rates have not improved in Sudan, and worse still, the number of children who are stunted and wasted has actually increased since 1987, especially in Sudan’s conflict-ridden Darfur region as well as the eastern states.

As food insecurity continues to rise, more children will be affected.

The effects of malnutrition on children may last a lifetime and are irreversible. It is estimated that half of children suffering from the worst form of severe malnutrition might not even survive if not treated in time!

UNICEF and partners are working together to prevent, early detect and treat malnutrition. Despite the challenging operational environment, UNICEF screened millions of children for malnutrition and reached children suffering from severe acute malnutrition (SAM) with therapeutic food and care, even in hard-to-reach areas.
