WFP Director Examines Food Insecurity in West Africa

UN have allocated 100 million dollars to fight hunger in Africa. Elvira Pruscini describes how West Africa faces its worst food crisis in a decade which has been exacerbated by the Russia-Ukraine war.

A recent article by the United Nations stated that they have allocated 100 million dollars to fight hunger in Africa and the Middle East including Somalia, Ethiopia, Kenya, Sudan, South Sudan, Nigeria, and Yemen. The UN says that spillover effects of the war in Ukraine has threatened to push millions of people closer to famine.

VOA’s Abby Sun spoke to Elvira Pruscini, Regional Deputy Director of the World Food Program about food insecurity in West Africa. Elvira describes how West Africa faces its worst food crisis in a decade which has been exacerbated by the Russia-Ukraine war. She says the main drivers of the food insecurity crisis are conflict, COVID-19, and the impact of climate change within the region and believes barriers should not be set to the free flow of the commodities market.
