The first ICC trial addressing the murder and torture of hundreds of thousands of people in Sudan’s Darfur region. Ali Muhammad Ali Abd-Al-Rahman’s case is the first before the Hague based court for crimes in Darfur.

A Sudanese militia leader is on trial at the International Criminal Court for atrocities committed nearly 20 years ago in Sudan’s Darfur region. Ali Abd-al-Rahman – also known as Ali Kushayb – is suspected to be linked to the Janjaweed armed group. He’s been charged with 31 counts of war crimes and crimes against humanity.

300,000 people were killed and 2.5 million fled their homes.

“I reject all of these charges”

Ali Muhammad Ali Abd-Al-Rahman is charged with overseeing thousands of pro-government militiamen during the peak of fighting from 2003 to 2004 and responsibility for inhuman atrocities including murder, rape, pillaging and torture.

The 72-year-old defendant, Ali Muhammad Ali Abd–Al-Rahman, pleaded innocent to all 31 charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity.

The trial is a important reminder that international courts like ICC can and do bring alleged perpetrators of crimes to justice, even if the painstaking process can be very long and slow. Think of it, Vladimir Putin.
