In Ukraine’s David and Goliath battle against the brute force of Russia, the United States and European countries have been adamant they won’t send troops into the war for fear of escalating it.
But that’s not to say there aren’t foreign fighters, including a number of Australians, taking up arms alongside Ukrainian soldiers. In fact there are actually about 20 thousand of them either in training or already on the battlefield.
Of course, it’s an incredibly dangerous, potentially deadly undertaking, but as Nine News correspondent Mark Burrows reports, these soldiers, Ukraine’s secret weapons, are giving Putin an almighty headache.
Thousands of volunteers from around the world who have come to Ukraine to defend the country from Russian attack, and more volunteers keep coming every day. Ukraine has established an “international” legion for people from abroad and President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has publicly urged foreigners to “fight side-by-side with Ukrainians against the Russian war criminals” to show support for his country.
The Ukrainian authorities have said that some 20,000 people from 52 countries have applied to join the international legion.
