Sudan Military Takeover May End Soon

The military takeover in Sudan appears to have a limited shelf life. Coup leader General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan has been talking to both American and United Nations leaders for the past two days. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Thursday forged an agreement for Sudan to form a new government.

General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan’s office released a statement on Thursday after he spoke on the phone with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

“The two parties agreed on the need to maintain the path of the democratic transition, the need to complete the structures of the transitional government and to speed up the formation of the government,” General al-Burhan’s office reported.

Furthermore, Antony Blinken announced: “his admiration for the Sudanese people who have repeatedly voiced their desire for democracy and called for an immediate restoration of the civilian-led government.

The Secretary urged General Burhan to immediately release all political figures detained since October 25 and return to a dialogue that returns Prime Minister Hamdok to office and restores civilian-led governance in Sudan.

The Secretary expressed his hope that the Sudanese military will take the action necessary to allow the resumption of a U.S.-Sudan partnership that encompasses political, diplomatic, security, and economic cooperation.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken also spoke on Thursday with Sudan’s Prime Minister Abdallah Hamdok. The Secretary underscored the strong support of the United States for the Sudanese people who seek democracy and called for an immediate restoration of the civilian-led transition to democracy. The Secretary underscored that a return to Sudan’s democratic transition will permit the resumption of a strong partnership that encompasses political, diplomatic, security, and economic cooperation between USA and Sudan.

General al-Burhan is becoming increasingly more isolated and disrespected for every hour within his own country as well as abroad. There are only a few more or less suspicious friends left for Mr al-Burhan.
