Hungary’s parliament voted to allow Sweden to join NATO. “We would like to welcome Sweden alongside Finland into the NATO alliance very, very soon,” said White House spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre. “Sweden’s membership will make us all stronger and safer,” NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said.

STOCKHOLM FEBRUARY 26: Hungary’s parliament voted to allow Sweden to join NATO, putting an end to a more than a year-long delay for the country to become a member and expanding the international alliance in response to Russia’s war on Ukraine. In recent years, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine pushed Sweden away from its decades of military non-alignment and towards the world’s biggest military alliance.

Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, who has maintained contact with Russia’s Putin in defiance of Western pressure, withheld approval of Sweden’s bid for more than 600 days. Now, all existing NATO allies have now ratified the membership status of Sweden.

– “Sweden is leaving 200 years of neutrality and military non-alignment behind,” Kristersson told a press conference.

– “We are joining NATO in order to defend what we are and everything we believe in even better. We are defending our freedom, our democracy and our values, together with others.”

– “We would like to welcome Sweden alongside Finland into the NATO alliance very, very soon,” said White House spokesperson Karine Jean-Pierre.

– “Sweden’s membership will make us all stronger and safer,” NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said on X.

The Hungarian ratification, backed by a large majority of lawmakers, will now be signed by the country’s speaker of parliament and president within a few days. After that, the remaining formalities, such as depositing accession documentation in Washington, are likely to be concluded swiftly.
