KHARTOUM OCTOBER 29: The UAE and Egypt, which once fought together in the Libya war, have become supporters of the rivals in Sudan’s civil war. Egypt had been inclining towards the Sudanese Armed Forces.

In September 2023, Egypt delivered the Turkish Bayraktar TB2 drones to assist the Sudan military’s war against Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo and his forces. Sudanese military’s members were also training in Egypt to enhance their handling of drones.

Cairo had been backing the SAF leader, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, as he supported Egypt in its conflict with Ethiopia. Egypt’s delivery of drones came as SAF was losing ground to RSF, after the UAE supplied powerful weapons and drones.

The Emirates had been supporting Dagalo’s Rapid Support Forces. The Arab nation had been supplying weapons to RSF in the name of humanitarian aid to Sudanese refugees. This covert operation was using an airfield and a hospital in Chad.

Dagalo is believed to be protecting the UAE’s interests in Sudan, where it is targeting a stake in a planned $6 billion port on the Red Sea. However, Egypt’s delivery of drones has jeopardized the Emirati ambitions in Sudan. The SAF had been targeting the RSF, its weapons warehouses, military bases and vehicles.

In several matters, Egypt has only acted as an Emirati pawn in the past. It even supported Khalifa Haftar in Libya, along with the UAE. However, Egypt is standing on the opposite side in Sudan, and it is standing strong. Will the UAE lose its interests to its very own puppet in Sudan?
