Powerful earthquake strikes Morocco, killing more than 600 and damaging historic Marrakech. The death toll is expected to rise. The United States Geological Survey said was the strongest tremor to hit that part of the North African nation in more than a century. The quake struck 71 kilometres southwest of tourist hotspot Marrakesh.

MARRAKESH SEPTEMBER 9: According to a provisional report, the earthquake killed more than 600 people in the provinces and municipalities of Al-Haouz, Marrakesh, Ouarzazate, Azilal, Chichaoua and Taroudant,” Morocco’s interior ministry said in a statement. Most deaths occurred in mountain areas close to the epicenter that were hard to reach. Rescue teams were having difficulty reaching the worst affected areas after roads were damaged.

The death toll is expected to rise.

The quake struck 71 kilometres southwest of tourist hotspot Marrakesh at a depth of 18.5 kilometres at 11:11 pm (2211 GMT), the US Geological Survey said.

The quake struck at 23:11 local time (22:11 GMT). There was a 4.9 aftershock 19 minutes later.

The earthquake damaging buildings in the historic city of Marrakech in what the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said was the strongest tremor to hit that part of the North African nation in more than a century.
