Prominent Surgeon Arrested in Khartoum Today. Dr. Alaa Eldin Awad Mohamed Nogoud, a prominent surgeon and pro-democracy activist in Sudan, was arrested by militants at his home in Khartoum earlier today. Dr. Nogoud has been an outspoken critic of the militants. 17 medical professionals have been killed since the eruption of the conflict.

KHARTOUM MAY 30: Prominent Surgeon Arrested in Khartoum Today. The Sudanese American Physicians Association (SAPA) reported today that Dr. Alaa Eldin Awad Mohamed Nogoud, a prominent surgeon and pro-democracy activist in Sudan, was arrested by militants at his home in Khartoum earlier today. Dr. Nogoud, the Secretary General of the Sudan Association of Surgeons, has been an outspoken critic of the militants.

According to SAPA, 17 medical professionals have been killed since the eruption of the conflict. In response to Dr. Nogoud’s arrest, SAPA’s Board of Directors released the following statement:

“We strongly condemn the arrest of our colleague and close friend Dr. Alaa Eldin Mohamed Nogoud by the militants in Khartoum today. The deliberate targeting of doctors has been a feature, not a bug, of the horrific crisis, and it must stop now. We are deeply concerned about Dr. Nogoud’s safety and call for his immediate release. We urge the international community to take strong action now to protect medical professionals on the ground.”
