KHARTOUM NOVEMBER 18: UN High Commissioner Volker Türk in his first official visit to Sudan, described the situation there as ‘grim’ but added the challenges can be surmounted. He said, “the communities are asking for security, to be able to return to their homes and their lands and for a justice system that works for them.”
He expressed concern on sporadic violence in one of Africa’s third largest nation, saying “I fear the cycles of violence will continue and call on the authorities to heed the warning signs and take immediate measures to stem the violence, in line with their international human rights obligations.”
Volker Türk is an Austrian lawyer and United Nations official. He has been the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights since 17 October 2022. Born in Linz, Türk attended the Khevenhüller Gymnasium Linz and studied law at the University of Linz. His doctoral dissertation at the University of Vienna was on the office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. Türk has “a background as a quiet UN diplomat. He has no history of publicly criticising governments that violate human rights or mistreat refugees.”
